Fleet Management Communication Skills Programme
Background
Fleet Management is a global ship management company. Its Technical Superintendents manage ships and deal directly with owners, so they need precise and effective communication skills. Many had moved from sea to shore work, which is a significant adjustment. The company was also moving towards a more customer-centric business model.
Shine Training was asked to build a communication programme for managers and senior managers across several countries.
Solution
"Steering the Conversation: Communication Skills for International Success" ran from September to December 2024, led by Andy Clark. Each module was a 3.5 hour workshop, delivered in person in Hong Kong, Singapore and Mumbai, with a Zoom session for colleagues elsewhere. Teams of three or four completed action-learning homework between modules.
Module 1: Identifying Personal Communication Styles
Module 2: Tailoring Communication, including active listening and the Think-Feel-Do Model
Module 3: Professional Written Communication, including the 10 Rules of Business E-mails and the P.D.A. structure (Purpose, Details, Action)
Module 4: Conflict Resolution, including the Thomas-Kilmann model and reframing

Participants rated every module highly on a 5-point scale.
Module 3, Professional Written Communication: 131 responses across 11 cohorts. Scores from 4.40 to 4.56 out of 5 on every question.
Module 4, Conflict Resolution: 123 responses across 11 cohorts. Scores from 4.45 to 4.63 out of 5 on every question.
